Scotland's swimming veteran, Lucy Hope, is gearing up for her fourth Commonwealth Games, an event that holds a special place in her heart. At 29, she's the eldest member of Scotland's swimming squad, a role that comes with both excitement and a touch of trepidation. As she prepares to compete in Glasgow 2026, Hope reflects on her journey, the evolution of her role within the team, and the potential for a career-defining moment.
A Journey of Growth and Experience
Hope's swimming career has been a testament to her dedication and talent. From her rookie appearance at Glasgow 2014 to becoming one of the team's veterans, she's embraced the role of mentor and leader. This shift in perspective is what makes her return to the Commonwealth Games so special. "It's exciting to be back in Glasgow," she says, "I'm going from being a rookie to being one of the oldest in the team. It's a different Games for me, and I get to know some of the younger swimmers, sharing my knowledge if they ask for it."
Her role as a mentor is a natural fit for Hope, who has a wealth of experience to draw upon. "I've had a lot of experience being part of Scotland and GB teams over the past 12 years," she explains. "Now, I can help bring out the best in everyone. In a relay, you need all four people to be on their game, and I've been able to bring that out in the past. I hope to do the same for Team Scotland this summer."
The Quest for a Commonwealth Medal
One of the few gaps in Hope's impressive resume is a Commonwealth Games medal. With a strong Scottish squad, including freestyle sprinter Hope, a medal is within reach. "The medals I've won have all been in relays," she notes. "Relays feel more patriotic because it's not just your name on the board, it's Scotland. It's about representing your country."
The 4x100m freestyle relay, in particular, holds promise for the Scottish team. "The Scottish girls have a good chance in the 4x100m freestyle," Hope believes. "We might surprise some people. It's about bringing out our best performance on the day."
A Career Bookended in Glasgow
As Hope contemplates her future, the idea of bookending her international career with a home Commonwealth Games is a compelling one. "I don't want to say definitively that Glasgow will be the end of my career," she says. "But it would be a full circle moment to end in Glasgow, too. Looking back on my career, I've seen and done so much. If you'd told me when I was 14 or 15 that I'd have been to two Olympics, been in three Olympic finals, and swum for Scotland at four Commonwealth Games, I wouldn't have believed you."
A Commonwealth medal would be the perfect send-off, but Hope remains focused on the present. "A medal could be the perfect send-off," she says, "but you can't control what others are doing. I'll try my best, and what will be, will be."
